- Conceptual frameworks in public health must always consider two major goals: guiding empirical studies to strengthen understanding of determinants and the mechanisms that generate them, and directing policymaking to clarify entry points for interventions and policies. The effects of social determinants on population health and health inequalities are identified through the study of long causal chains of intermediary factors. Many of these factors interact with each other and tend to accumulate among disadvantaged groups. This book, derived from a World Health Organization document, reviews, synthesizes, and summarizes extensive evidence to present a unified conceptual framework for understanding and acting on the social determinants of health. It is intended to support knowledge development and policymaking in the field of health equity.
